Collaborative practice for nurse practitioners
AANP records Mississippi as a reduced practice state, meaning state law requires a collaborative relationship with a physician throughout an NP's career rather than only at the start. In day to day terms that means a documented collaborative arrangement and protocols consistent with board rules, with the specifics sitting in the Board of Nursing's regulations rather than in any employer handbook. Before signing a locum or telehealth contract, find out who your collaborating physician would be, what the review arrangements are, and who pays for that relationship, because it is a real cost of freelancing as an NP here. The national advanced practice compact remains inactive, so it does not offer a way around any of this.
Where the freelance work sits
Jackson is the referral hub, with the state's academic medicine, tertiary services and the largest concentration of specialty clinics. The Gulf Coast runs on a different rhythm: Biloxi, Gulfport and Pascagoula carry hospitality and casino traffic, a military and Veterans Affairs presence, and summer volumes that do not look like the rest of the year. Tupelo anchors the northeast, Hattiesburg the Pine Belt, and Meridian the east.
Then there is the Delta, where clinician shortages are severe and small hospitals operate at the edge of viability. Per diem and travel rates in those counties reflect how hard the shifts are to fill, and short contracts in rural emergency and med-surg coverage come up regularly. State telehealth policy has been comparatively developed for years, so remote triage, follow-up and behavioral health visit work is genuinely available from a Mississippi address rather than theoretical.
Precepting demand across the state
Nurse practitioner programs in the state, and the online programs enrolling Mississippi residents, place students into a limited number of clinical sites, and the queue is longest for psychiatric mental health. What the block pays
Rates are the preceptor's to set, between $12 and $20 per student hour. Since a block is 120 student hours, that is why one block is worth $1,440 to $2,400 at the ends of that band. Two payments follow the evaluations: the midpoint releases the first, the final releases the rest. No fee comes out of it, and none is charged to you elsewhere. Taxes, credits and how to begin
There is no Mississippi preceptor tax credit. Some states operate one, and those that do usually restrict it to teaching done without pay, which paid blocks would fail on their face. What remains is ordinary self-employment treatment: estimated payments, contractor deductions worth raising with a preparer, and records kept as you go rather than reconstructed in April.
Eligibility is short enough to check in a minute. You need an active license with nothing pending against it, national board certification covering the student's population, and two years in practice after certifying. An MSN-prepared RN who teaches or supervises today can host education and leadership practica instead. The affiliation agreement is arranged between the school and your practice without your involvement, and the application is the only step you take.

They are asked more often, because there are few sites relative to the number of students needing hours and because schools value the exposure a rural rotation gives. If you practise in the Delta, along the coast or in a small county clinic, expect steady interest. You still control how many students you accept and when, and you can pause your listing at any time.
Is precepting income treated as self-employment?
Yes. You precept as an independent contractor, so nothing is withheld and you do not become an employee of the school or of this network. Payment above the annual threshold is reported on a 1099-NEC. Set aside part of each deposit for federal self-employment tax and any state liability, and use a preparer who handles contractor returns.
